Twelve inmates complained of pain after being involved in a minor accident while on their way to court appearances Monday morning.

The Western Tidewater Regional Jail van was transporting inmates to the Mills E. Godwin Jr. Courts Building when it ran up on the curb and struck a crape myrtle tree in the 400 block of North Main Street about 8:11 a.m.

The van did not have any damage, according to a press release from the city. The twelve inmates, as well as the driver and guard, initially reported no injuries. However, all the inmates later reported minor back, neck and shoulder pain and were transported to Sentara Obici Hospital by Suffolk Fire and Rescue.

Ten inmates had been returned to the jail by mid-afternoon after being examined. Two inmates remained at the hospital undergoing medical review.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
