Community coalition to present to School Board

Members of the newly-formed Community Action Coalition of Suffolk already are putting plans into motion.
Two of its members will make presentations at the School Board meeting tonight to bring attention to an existing program and a separate campaign-launch event.
The coalition was formed in August to bring together community members to take action to respond to social challenges the city faces.
One of the presentations tonight will highlight the availability of a Redskins Charitable Foundation program, “Coaches in the Classroom,” that places mentors in schools to help student athletes meet GPA, SAT and other academic requirements needed to continue their education.
The other presentation will address teen violence, which coalition members feel is strongly impacting students. Its proposal will be to help organize a youth-led “Be Fight-Free” non-violence rally to raise awareness of the city’s existing youth programs, educate other community members and youth and serve as a catalyst for a long-lasting campaign.
To hear the proposals, visit the beginning of the board meeting at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers, 441 Market St., or turn to channel 6 on your television.
