A grandfather pleaded guilty Wednesday in the July 2011 death of his 2-year-old granddaughter.

Steven Wade Bullock, 51, was arrested in June after officials determined his granddaughter, Destiny Riddick, had ingested suboxone, which is a prescription drug used to treat opiate dependence.

According to a city press release issued at the time of his arrest, police and rescue personnel were called to a home in the 1100 block of Truman Road on July 17, 2011. The child was found unresponsive and transported to Sentara Obici Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.

The drug was kept in a candy dish at the home, according to the news release.

Bullock pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, which was reduced from felony homicide. He also entered guilty pleas to child abuse with serious injury, possession of a controlled substance, conspiracy to possess a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.

The girl’s 39-year-old grandmother, Kimberly Artis, also was arrested in the girl’s death. Her trial on charges of homicide, child abuse, possession of controlled substance and conspiracy to possess a controlled substance is set to begin Nov. 29.
