An 80-percent-size replica of the Vietnam Wall will be among the monuments on display at Bennett’s Creek Park starting Thursday during a special visit by the American Veterans Traveling Tribute.
The American Veterans Traveling Tribute already is on its way from St. Louis, Mo., to Suffolk for its Thursday opening at Bennett’s Creek Park.
The mobile display honors those throughout history who have sacrificed for America. The centerpiece is an 80-percent replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., but the exhibit also includes memorials to World War II, the Korean War, the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Fort Hood shooting, police and firefighters, prisoners of war and those who remain missing in action.
R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, with the help of numerous sponsors, is bringing the exhibit to Suffolk to mark its 125th anniversary. Entry to the site is free.
The exhibit opens Thursday and will remain open through Sunday. Though rain is forecast for Thursday, organizers still are hoping for good weather and expecting about 50,000 attendees at the event throughout the weekend.
“We want beautiful weather all weekend,” said Robin Magrisi, a volunteer public relations coordinator for the event.
The wall includes the names of more than 58,000 American service members who never arrived home alive from Vietnam. Of those, 1,304 were native Virginians and 344 came from Hampton Roads, according to Blake Baker, vice president of the funeral home.
At the park, a computerized database will be available to help visitors find the name they are seeking. Free rubbing sheets will be available for visitors to take home a memento of the wall.
A schedule of events includes speakers and special music, including the Marine Forces Reserve Band.
“We’ve got some programming for people who can come and enjoy that, but there’s going to be plenty of quiet time and reflective time, as well,” Magrisi said.
Following is a schedule of the weekend’s events. For more information, visit www.freedomtribute.com or call 539-4691.
