Wine, cheese shop opens

Co-owners Valerie Morrison and Randy Withers show off the front of C3 Vino on West Washington Street this week. The wine, cheese and charcuterie shop held an official ribbon cutting Friday after a soft opening the week prior.

A new specialty shop officially opened in downtown on Friday.

C3 Vino derives its name from the products it sells — cheese, charcuterie and corks (wine) — and also sells a selection of accompanying products such as olives, crackers, nuts and bottle holders. There also is a rack full of a fourth “C” product — cigars.

“We have put a lot of time and effort into this,” said Randy Withers, who with Valerie Morrison is a co-owner of the establishment at the corner of West Washington and Main streets. “We’re proud to be part of the revitalization of historic downtown Suffolk.”

The store is located in one of two street-level retail spaces that were created when the building was renovated. The upper floors feature the Lofts at 111, which includes 26 apartments.

Withers said the space was a “nice fit” for the business. “We’re glad we chose to come to Suffolk,” he said.

The store carries a variety of meats, including Italian hams, Berkshire pork and others cut fresh by hand; “cheeses from all over the world” and other goodies. But the wine takes up the most space.

“We have a good selection of products,” Withers said. “It’s all hand-picked.”

He said the store is a “proud supporter of Virginia wines” and features many labels from the state. Accessories such as bottle holders and decorations complement the large selection.

The shop also plans to offer wine classes, wine-of-the-month specials and private wine tastings. In addition, complimentary wine and cheese tastings will be held every Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.

“C3Vino is an exciting specialty shop that complements the ongoing public and private revitalization efforts in downtown Suffolk,” Mayor Linda T. Johnson said in a press release announcing Friday’s ribbon cutting. “This venture is a welcome addition to our business community.”
