Following are details on two upcoming offerings hosted by PDCCC—one in October and the other in November:

Antique Car and Truck Show

The Paul D. Camp Community College Foundation will hold its second annual Antique Car and Truck Show on Oct. 30, on the Franklin Campus at 100 N. College Drive. Registration will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by the show from noon to 3 p.m. Judging and presentation of trophies will take place from 3 to 4 p.m.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to provide student scholarships and support college program initiatives. There will be music, free dash plates for all entries, and refreshments for sale. The show is limited to the first 150 entries, and pre-registration is encouraged.

Pre-register by Oct. 1 for $13 each, or register the day of the show for $15 per entry. For more information, call Herb DeGroft at 357-6210.

AARP Driver Safety Program

The AARP Driver Safety Program (formerly AARP 55 Alive) will be presented at Paul D. Camp Community College’s Regional Workforce Development Center (Room 204) on the Franklin Campus on Nov. 2 and 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This eight-hour classroom refresher course is designed for motorists aged 50 or older who have years of driving experience. It takes into consideration the physical changes of the maturing driver and identifies ways to compensate for age-related physical changes.

Course material is based on information gained through research to determine what is needed in this group to update driver knowledge and skills. Most important, the curriculum provides opportunities for the participants to identify individual problem areas and apply information that is needed to improve their behavior as drivers. Attendance is required both days.

The registration deadline is Oct. 25, and the cost is $12 for an AARP member or $14 for non-members. Checks should be made payable to AARP and given to the instructor at the beginning of class on Nov. 2. For registration details, call the Division of Workforce Development at 569-6050.

Kudos to Rabiu and Tureman

Kudos to Dr. Safianu Rabiu, Professor of Biology, and Robert Tureman, Associate Professor of Information Systems Technology, at PDCCC, who were featured in a photo accompanying an article in a Virginia Tech newsletter on a recent educators’ geospatial workshop they attended at Virginia Tech. In the photo, John McGee, Associate Professor at Tech, shows Rabiu and Tureman how to use a handheld GPS.

The Virginia Geospatial Extension Program, based in Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment, partnered with the Virginia Community College System and the Virginia Space Grant Consortium to develop a geospatial Web portal. The VCCS Portal will support the Community College System’s efforts to train geospatial technicians to meet industry demand for skilled workers.
