They seem harmless enough sitting in a cabinet or stuffed in drawer, but unused prescription drugs pose a danger to families.

To help residents safely and properly dispose of drugs, the Suffolk Police Department is participating in National Take-Back Day today. Investigators will be collecting medications at both Walmart locations at 6259 College Drive and 1200 N. Main St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Drug abuse is directly related to increased crime rates, overdose deaths and emergency room visits,” Governor Bob McDonnell said in a press release. “In Virginia, drug deaths are comparable to the number of traffic fatalities each year. We want to change the equation by taking preventative steps, including encouraging Virginians to get rid of old medications. People should not hold on to expired or unused medications, particularly in homes with children, teens and seniors.”

The event is part of an effort by the Drug Enforcement Administration Richmond District, which also includes other local agencies.

Its goal is to reduce the amount of unused prescription drugs present in the state by providing an opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceuticals, controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction.

Controlled, non-controlled, and over-the-counter substances may be collected.

No questions or requests for identification will be made. Participants may dispose of medication in its original container or by removing the medication from its container.

If an original container is submitted, you should remove any identifying information from the prescription label.
