Hollins freshman Nicole Hemmis (Nansemond River) was named Student-Athlete of the Week by Hollins for her performance in her first collegiate golf tournament.
Hemmis finished sixth individually and Hollins was third as a team at the Piedmont Fall Invitational in Clarksville, Ga. Sept. 11-12. Hemmis shot rounds of 77 and 81 to finish 14-over par.
The tournament’s field included the top-ranked golf team in NCAA Div. III, Methodist. Methodist won the tourney and four of the five golfers ahead of Hemmis were Methodist golfers.
“She went out there and had no fear,” said Hollins head coach Bill Mannino. “It was really great to watch.”
Freshman Mackenzie Westfall (Nansemond-Suffolk) earned Co-Rookie of the Week honors in the Liberty League for the Union women’s volleyball team.
Last weekend at the Union Invitational in Schenectady, N.Y., Union (5-6) won three of four matches. Westfall, a setter for the Dutchwomen, totaled 107 assists and 30 digs in the four matches.
