Linda Mae Ashby Powell, 68, entered into her eternal home early Tuesday morning, Aug. 21, 2012, surrounded by her husband, daughter, brothers and a host of friends after a courageous battle with multiple illnesses. She was predeceased by her parents, Virginia and Irvin Ashby.

Linda graced the chancel choir of Bethany Presbyterian Church for more than 30 years singing praises to her Lord Jesus Christ. Serving formerly as Sunday school teacher, VBS, assistant superintendent, church life, mission yard sales and always being an ambassador to friends and strangers with her sweet spirit and contagious smile. She spearheaded cooking committees and fund raisers for the Zuni Ruritan Club. Linda left the business world in 1975 to rear her daughter having served as credit manager for Leggett’s in Suffolk.

She is survived by her loving family including her husband and soul mate for more than 44 years, Charles L. Powell; her light of her life, daughter Jennifer Dawn Powell, of Windsor; brothers, James Calvin Ashby and wife Nancy of Madison, N.C. and Cecil A. Ashby and wife Barbara of Suffolk, Va.; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and other family.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Dr. Steve Frazier at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 5358 Zuni Circle, Zuni, VA 23898 with burial at Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends today, Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, Va.
