A Suffolk woman was arrested Tuesday night after a police chase that began in Chesapeake and went through Portsmouth before ending in Suffolk, where police finally learned that two young children had been in the minivan during the chase.

Alisia Carter, 24, of the 1400 block of Falcon Street in Suffolk, is charged with shoplifting, felony eluding, assault on a police officer, vandalism, child endangerment and driving on a suspended license. A second woman, 25-year-old Ashley Riddick of Maple Avenue in Portsmouth, is charged with shoplifting, according to a news release from Chesapeake police.

According to the release, Chesapeake police responded to a call of shoplifting at the Chesapeake Square Walmart, located in the 2400 block of Chesapeake Square Ring Road, about 6:50 p.m. The suspects were reported to be fleeing the area toward Taylor Road in a minivan.

Police located a vehicle matching the description and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the suspect vehicle did not stop, according to the release.

Police pursued the vehicle into Portsmouth, onto Interstate 264 and then into Suffolk. At some point, Virginia State Police arrived and assumed lead of the pursuit.

The vehicle attempted to ram Chesapeake Police and State Police vehicles twice but was unable to make contact, according to the release. At the intersection of Portsmouth Boulevard and Nansemond Parkway in Suffolk, the vehicle rammed a State Police vehicle, causing an accident and ending the pursuit at 7:11 p.m.

That was when officers learned there were two small children in the vehicle, who were unharmed. One of the adults suffered only minor scratches on her arm that were treated at the scene, according to the release.
