One of the best indicators for a child’s success in school is the involvement of his or her parents in the educational process. From checking homework to attending parent-teacher conferences to joining the school’s PTA, there are many opportunities for parents to take part of the responsibility for helping their children succeed.

An event this Saturday is intended to promote the involvement of fathers in their children’s lives. The “Fathers as First Teachers on the First Day of School” event, sponsored by the Y2K Academy, will encourage fathers to take their children to school on the first day and give them a chance to pledge their support for the year.

According to a 2001 U.S. Department of Education study, highly involved biological fathers had children who were 43 percent more likely to earn mostly A’s and 33 percent less likely to repeat a grade than their peers who did not have involved fathers.

During the event, sponsors will give away 200 pairs of new or gently used shoes on a first-come, first-served basis, and backpacks will be given out to those who have pre-registered. A representative from the Office of the Attorney General will be on hand for the gang awareness presentation. Games of all sorts will be available for kids, and they also will have the opportunity to get free horseback rides.

It promises to be a fun day for parents and children alike, but the message is even more important than the fun, and the payoff could be huge for those children whose fathers are inspired to become more involved in their lives.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Epps Farm Supply/Three Sisters Berry Farm and Market, 2170 Joshua Lane. Fathers, mothers and children are all invited to participate in the free event.
