Madi and Ben Kincaid looked like they were doing the normal back-to-school shopping with their mother on Wednesday at Belk.

But the clothes they were choosing will first be worn during a fashion show at the clothing store on Saturday.

The bi-annual KidFest event will be held Saturday, and it features about 13 local kids modeling the latest fashions. There will also be refreshments, contests and more.

“I’m kind of nervous,” Ben, 12, admitted during his shopping expedition. He waited by the register with his choices while his younger sister tried on dresses.

Ben, who is entering John F. Kennedy Middle School this year, had picked out a pair of jeans with a T-shirt that said, “I brought the awesome. What did you bring?”

He — or rather, his mom — also selected a pair of khaki pants with a pink, collared shirt and navy blue blazer.

“I think the navy blue goes with the pink,” Ben said, adding with a smile, “Pink is manly.”

Mom Mason Kincaid said she thinks Ben will do well in the fashion show, despite his nervousness. She recalled that Ben, a member of Boy Scout Troop 1929, won the chance to drive the Zamboni at a Norfolk Admirals game and was waving to the crowd the entire time.

Eight-year-old Madi, who attends Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School, also chose a jeans outfit, along with a dress in various shades of pink. She said she is excited to model in the fashion show.

The event is a company-wide celebration that is held twice yearly, store manager Lisa Outland said.

“We just want to make sure they know we’re here for them, because they’re here for us,” Outland said. “Without them, what is our purpose?”

Outland said the day is special for the children who are modeling the latest fashions. Not only do parents get discounts on back-to-school clothes, but the children get lasting memories.

“They’re going to grow up one day and remember that day they modeled at the Belk store,” she said. “They will know the fashions they want are right here at Belk.”

The event will last from noon to 3 p.m. at the store, 1403 N. Main St. Other activities will include hula-hoop, jump-rope and coloring contests.
