James Sherrod Jr.

James Sherrod Jr., also known as “Mailman,” 55, of 200 Charlemagne Drive, Suffolk, died July 29, 2012, at his residence. He was the son of the late James and Frances Sherrod.
James retired after 30 years from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier and after 34 years from the U.S. Army Reserve as a master sergeant. He was a faithful member of Little Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Samaritan Brothers. As a member of a motorcycle club called “The Sweat Hogs,” he enjoyed riding whenever he could.
He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and loving wife of 20 years, Marion Hardison Sherrod; three sons James Sherrod III (JR) and Minoso A. Rodgers, both of Washington, D.C., and Michael R. Rodgers, of Suffolk; six sisters, Thelma Brown, Mary A. Slade (James), Gloria Lassiter (Richard), Mary F. Sherrod Whitley (William) all of Chesapeake, Bernice Dumas (Robert “Bob”), of Virginia Beach, Pastor Miriam Sherrod Copeland (Randolph “Randy”), of Suffolk; three brothers, Elder Bernell Sherrod (Denise), who was always by his brother’s side, and Samuel L. Sherrod (Linda), all of Suffolk, and Prescott Sherrod (Natascha), of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren; two uncles, Bishop Clarence Copeland (Cora), of Suffolk, and William Lloyd Copeland (Gail), of Reading, Pa.; three aunts, Mamie Anthony, of Waterbury, Conn., Annie Harper, of Newport News, and Gloria Jean Smith, of Suffolk; mother-in-law Arnecia S. Hardison; a devoted sister-in-law, Maxine Jordan (John), of Suffolk; two brothers-in-law Clinton R. Hardison (Norma) and William C. Hardison (Flossie), all of Suffolk; two devoted cousins, Minister Ronnie Anthony, of Newport News, and Minister James “Tim” Richardson, of Suffolk; a devoted friend, Minister Terry Burnett, of Suffolk; and devoted adopted parents, Curtis and Barbara Sumpter, of Suffolk.
A funeral service will be held at noon Aug. 6, 2012, at Tabernacle Christian Church, 2500 E. Washington St., Suffolk, officiated by Pastor Ralph Richardson III. Interment will be at the Albert G.
