Headed into Sunday’s final round, Suffolk’s John David Sanderson was in the top 60 players — and among the top 35 amateurs — in the SunTrust State Open of Virginia.

The tournament, being held at the 7,033-yard, par-72 Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, has matched professionals from around the state with amateurs.

Sanderson, the only player in the tournament from Suffolk, was set to tee off at 9:40 a.m. today with PGA professionals Josh Speight of West Point and Randolph Darden of Blacksburg.

Through the first three rounds of the tournament, Sanderson had a score of 224, having shot rounds of 76, 74 and 74. His score put him in 27 shots behind the leader, Richmond-based PGA professional Jay Woodson, who delivered his second straight round of 4-under-par 68 on Saturday.

Woodson was at 9-under 207 through three days, a stroke ahead of fellow professional Steven Pierce, 26, of Centreville.

A pair of collegians, 19-year-old Blacksburg resident Jake Mondy, this summer’s VSGA Amateur champion, and Weston Eklund, 22, of Charlottesville, both were two strokes back at 7-under 209. Mondy is a rising sophomore at Auburn University, while Eklund is a rising senior at Radford University.
