A Suffolk woman was charged with cruelty and injuries to children Monday after her 2-year-old son allegedly was found wandering in the middle of the street two weeks ago.

Just before 2:30 p.m. on June 29, a citizen called to report a small child wandering in the 3800 block of Pughsville Road, according to city spokeswoman Diana Klink.

An officer responded and allegedly found the child dressed only in a diaper and T-shirt with no shoes, Klink said. The temperature at the time was about 99 degrees, with a heat index of 106.

The mother, 27-year-old Ashley Courtney Sherrill, was found at home in her trailer nearby, according to Klink. The child allegedly had been gone for at least 10 to 15 minutes before he was located.

Child Protective Services was notified of the incident, Klink added.
