Amelia Boyer of Suffolk shot a pair of 47s to wind up in 36th place on Monday in the first day of stroke play qualifying for the 87th Virginia State Golf Association’s Women’s Amateur Championship.

Boyer’s 94 total for the day on the par-72 Golden Horseshoe Golf Club Gold Course in Williamsburg put her among the bottom five contenders and assured her a tough draw on Tuesday in the second qualifying round of stroke play.

She was set to tee off on Tuesday at 7:39 a.m., but showers delayed the start of the second round by an hour and a half. In the end, she found herself unable to better her previous day’s score. With a two-day total of 189, Boyer failed to make the cut for the first round of match play, which starts today.

Carol Robertson of Virginia Beach shot 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday, qualifying to earn medalist honors in the tournament.

Robertson, 28, the head women’s golf coach at Old Dominion University, opened with 5-under 67 on day one and finished qualifying at 7-under 137. Robertson is the low qualifier for match play. She was the only competitor to post two subpar rounds leading up to the match play portion of the championship.

Seventeen of the 19 low qualifiers for match play are age 21 or under; Robertson and reigning VSGA Senior Women’s Amateur champion Mimi Hoffman of Springfield (151, 73-78), the 10th low qualifier for match play, led the mid-amateurs.
