A birthday party got out of hand at 3:30 a.m. Saturday and resulted in three people suffering minor injuries from gunshot wounds, according to a city spokeswoman.
According to city spokeswoman Diana Klink, the shooting occurred in the 400 block of Central Avenue between 3:30 and 3:40 a.m. It happened after the crowd was asked to leave the scene of the birthday party, she said.
Someone assaulted two victims, then the boyfriend of one of the victims got involved and was grazed in the face by a bullet, Klink said. Another victim was grazed in the upper left arm by a bullet and refused treatment. Yet another victim was shot in the left hand and drove himself to Sentara Obici Hospital, from which he was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
At least one vehicle also was damaged by the gunshots.
City spokeswoman Debbie George said Jonathan Bynum has been charged with discharging a firearm in public. None of the victims wish to pursue charges for their injuries, she said.
