R. Braxton Hill Jr., 88, of the 1400 block of Harmott Avenue, died peacefully Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 in his residence. He was a native of Suffolk and a long time resident of the Lakewood community of Norfolk. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rowland Braxton Hill and Chlorine Gladys Liverman Hill, and his son, Harvey Brooks Hill.
He attended the Norfolk division of the College of William and Mary and was a graduate of the University of Richmond and the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School at Columbia University. He served his country as an officer in the United States Navy and was a veteran of World War II. In 1945 he joined the accounting firm of Waller and Woodhouse and, in 1980, was appointed partner in charge of the Norfolk office of Price Waterhouse. He was a former Norfolk City councilman.
He served as president of the Virginia Society of CPAs, chairman of the Virginia State Board of Accounting, council member of the American Institute of CPAs and the National Conference of Lawyers and CPAs. He was a co-director of the University of Virginia Annual Conference on Federal Taxation and a founding trustee of the University of Virginia Tax Foundation. He was an honorary member of the Virginia Bar Association. He was secretary-treasurer of the Hilton Foundation for Accounting Education for more than 20 years.
He was a member and former president of the Norfolk Rotary Club, the Norfolk Boys Club, the Lakewood Civic League and vice president of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. He served on the boards of Norfolk General Hospital and Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Virginia. He was awarded the Virginia Society of CPA’s Public Service Commendation.
He was a member and former deacon, treasurer and Sunday school teacher of Talbot Park Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Virginia Club, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, and a founding member of the Harbor Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara Balance Hill; three sons, R. Braxton Hill III and his wife, Elaine, George Balance Hill and his wife, Louise, and Allen Bryan Hill and Carolyn; a daughter, Bruce H. Darden, and her husband, Bill; and six grandchildren, Brack IV, Austin, Paris, Brick Jr. , Mimi, and Beck; three great-grandchildren, Isabelle Lane, Braxton and Walker; two sisters; Mrs. Page Richardson of Suffolk and Mrs. Chlorine Murphy of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. He was a wonderful family man, a dedicated professional and enjoyed his many active years in the community.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Reverend William B. Trexler officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Thursday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. H.D.
