A pastor who has ministered in Suffolk for several years has started her own church.

Pastor Brenda T. Parrish founded Joy Apostolic Ministries, which meets at a banquet room at the Quality Inn, 2864 Pruden Blvd. Sunday services begin at 10:45 a.m., preceded by prayer time at 10 a.m.

“It’s been a calling on my life for about 12 years to start this ministry,” Parrish said. “It was just the leading of the Lord.”

Parrish helped establish Heaven on Earth Ministries, which is located on East Pinner Street. She holds a bachelor’s degree in religious education and a master’s degree in theology.

“Our mission is empowering God’s people with passion and transforming lives through the truth of God’s word,” she said. “We reach out to those who are hurting, who need a safe haven where they can learn about God. We believe that everyone has a place in the house of God, and He can use them in the kingdom and in the ministry.”

Parrish said visitors to the church can expect praise and worship, Biblical teaching, and ministries of young people, men and women. Bible studies also are offered.

“We’re just basically here to help people find God in their life,” she said.

The butterfly is used as a symbol for the church because “we feel that just as the caterpillar transforms into something beautiful and useful, the word of God transforms men, women, boys and girls into great warriors and witnesses for Christ,” Parrish wrote in an email.”

The church currently has 35 members, but Parrish hopes to draw in more with the church’s ministry.

“All are welcome,” she said. “We’re not going to turn anyone away because of how they’re dressed. If you’re looking for a place where you can be healed and fulfill the purpose God has for you, we open our doors and our heart to anyone.”
