Deacon Chester M. Holland Sr., 80, of 1740 Airport Road, passed to eternal glory on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009. He was a native of Nansemond County. He is the husband of the late Elviria S. Holland, and the son of the late Saul and Quemilla P. Holland. He was predeceased by a brother, Leslie Holland, and a sister Grace Holland.
Chester (a.k.a. Red Dog) leaves six children to cherish his memory. Hope Manley (Warren), of Norfolk, Va., Wanda H. Stirling, of Baltimore, Md., Chester M. Holland Jr., of Suffolk, Va., the Rev. Alexander L. Holland Sr. (Linda), of Portsmouth, Va., Marshelle Williams (Craig), of Suffolk, Va., and Oria D. Holland, of Richmond, Va. A sister Virginia Reuben (Walter), of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Three sister in-laws, Essie P. Ridley, of Suffolk, Va., Levy Jordan, of Baltimore, Md., and Josephine Christian (John), of Newport News, Va. Brother in-law, Herbert Scott (Dora), of Suffolk, Va. Ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A lifetime friend, Mr. Harvey Hicks.
A wake will be held for Deacon Holland on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. at Pebbles Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at noon at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 125 County St., Suffolk, Va.
