Marion Virginia Adams Tomlin, “Nanny,” 87, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 20, 2012.

She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who spent her life caring for her family. She worked many years as a farmer’s wife and more than 30 years in the Holland Elementary School lunchroom. As a lifelong member of Holland Baptist Church, Marion loved the Lord. She was a true Southern lady who enjoyed cooking, sewing and working in her garden. Nanny was always known and will be remembered for her caring and selfless nature towards others. Marion was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Cortez H. Tomlin, parents James and Elizabeth Adams, siblings Mitchel Adams, Ann Gayle, Raymond Adams, Doris Stancill and Jenny Lee Wilkins.

She is survived by her two children, James (Linda) Tomlin, of Suffolk, Va., and Betty (Bill) Cherry, of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, Cecil C. Adams, of Lake Gaston, N.C., and a sister-in-law, Ellen Adams, of Suffolk, Va., two grandchildren, Tina (Rusty) Smith, of Chapel Hill, N.C., and James (Lisa) Tomlin Jr., of Washington, N.C., five great-grandchildren, Tracy (Brandon) Gardner, of Manassas Park, Va., Nicholas and Grace Smith, of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Alura and Connor Tomlin, and Ariel Thompson, of Washington, N.C., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Nanny will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 23, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434, with the Rev. Michael D. Halley and Johnnie Tomlin officiating. Interment will follow at Holland Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
