The sounds of summer will be back in the air beginning on Friday, as the city’s annual TGIF summer concert series returns to Constant’s Wharf.

Five concerts are planned at the park behind the Hilton Garden Inn before the series moves up north for five more concerts set for Bennett’s Creek Park.

There are some new bands this year, and organizers already have their fingers crossed for good weather.

Several of last year’s concerts were canceled because of thunderstorms, a wildfire and a hurricane. Even efforts to reschedule the bands at other events were rebuffed by Mother Nature.

“We’re praying it won’t happen this year, but you never know,” said Lori Carter of Suffolk Parks and Recreation. “We’re looking forward to a great year.”

TGIF favorites from past years, such as Strictly Bizzness and Hotcakes, are back in the lineup this year. New bands, such as Tailgate Down, The Fuzz Band and The Rotations are also in the mix.

“We like to throw a wild card in there so we can have different tastes and different flavors,” Carter said.

The series will run from June 22 to July 20 at Constant’s Wharf, and from Aug. 3-31 at Bennett’s Creek Park. The venue opens at 6 p.m. each night, and the music begins at 6:30 and wraps up by 9:30. The concerts are free.

People are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs, but there’s one thing they won’t be able to bring this year — coolers and food from outside.

“We have vendors who come out there and pay to be there, so we like to give them the business if possible,” Carter said.

The first installment this Friday will be a business appreciation day, sponsored by the Suffolk Economic Development Authority.

On July 6, the National Night Out duck race will be held.
