Suffolk Youth Athletic Association softball teams won all three age groups in the 2012 Western Tidewater Softball Conference tournaments.
Each season, the teams from the Western Tidewater Softball Conference compete for the season-ending championship held in early June. This year’s competition included nine Pinto (8U) teams, 10 Mustang (10U) teams, and six Bronco (12U) teams competing for the championship in each age group.
The double-elimination style tournament was played over two weeks in different localities, with winners advancing through a bracket-style schedule.
In the Pinto (8U) division, the SYAA Stingers beat the SYAA Dolphins for the championship, held in Windsor, by a six-inning score of 8-5. The SYAA Dolphins finished as runners-up in the tournament, giving SYAA a 1-2 finish in the age-league division. The Stingers capped off an undefeated season with 18 wins.
The SYAA Elite dominated the Chesapeake Fastpitch (CFSA) Tsunami for the Mustang (10U) championship in six innings with a score of 14-5. This was the second meeting of these two teams in the tournament, with both occasions showing the SYAA Elite as the winner. The Elite ended the season with a record of 13-4. The Mustang 10U tournament was held in Holland.
The SYAA HiLiters earned the Bronco (12U) Championship in a seven-inning battle with the Smithfield Cyclones, coming from behind in the bottom of the seventh inning to win by a score of 6-5. The HiLiters’ come-from-behind victory put the team’s record at 15 wins, one loss and one tie. The Bronco (12U) tournament was held in Suffolk.
Local recreational softball organizations make up the Western Tidewater Softball conference, which includes the Smithfield Recreation Association, the Holland Athletic Association, the Windsor Athletic Association, the Suffolk Youth Athletic Association and the Chesapeake Fastpitch Softball Association.
