Barbara Gwaltney Powell, 77, died May 31, 2010. A native of Nansemond County, she was the daughter of the late Ethel Christian and Doc Allen Gwaltney, and the widow of George Alix Powell. She was formerly an office assistant with the State Agricultural Department. She was also a lifelong member of Oakland Christian Church and a member of the Loyal Fellowship Class.
Survivors include one daughter, Sheila Morris and husband, Mark, of Suffolk; two sons, Ronnie Powell and wife, Susan, of Suffolk and Brian Powell and wife, Jennifer, of Newport News; two sisters, Elizabeth Whitley and Jean Johnson, of Windsor; five grandchildren, Brianna Powell, Abigail Powell, James Powell, Christina Morris and Olivia Morris. She is also survived by her aunt, Eloise Bailey and her husband, Jack, of Nashville, Tenn.
A funeral service will be conducted by Pastor Tim Rawls and Mr. Andy Powers at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, 2010 at R.W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be at the Newman Memorial Cemetery. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, Suffolk, Va.
