In yet another example of Suffolk residents pulling together to help their neighbors, the Walmart store on North Main Street stands at No. 2 among all stores in the nation in fundraising for children’s hospitals.

The store has been conducting a flurry of fundraising for the past month, from selling barbecue sandwiches to asking customers to donate at the registers.

It’s a heartwarming example of altruism at its best. There’s hardly any monetary benefit to Walmart to do all this fundraising, but the combined effort of the stores’ employees nationwide likely translates to millions of dollars in time.

Likewise, the customers of the stores have given generously from their own pockets, to the tune of more than $56,000 in the North Main Street store alone.

That amount of giving has catapulted the store to No. 2 in the country among all Walmart stores, trailing a store in Arizona by less than $1,000.

The store hopes to best its desert counterpart today, when it will hold dinner sales catered by Ricky and Roy’s. Starting at 10 a.m., customers can choose barbecue or chicken with two vegetables, a roll and drink for $8. All the proceeds will go toward the fund, and the food is available until it’s gone.

Money raised locally is given to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, which treats children of all ages without regard to whether their families are able to pay. The money raised through this and other fundraisers helps defray the costs of this important work.
