Nansemond-Suffolk sophomore Gabrielle Bishop won two state championships and broke three VIS state records Saturday at the Virginia Independent School Swimming Championships in Manassas.

Bishop won the private school state title in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.75) and the 100 backstroke (57.13), setting new state records with both victories.

Bishop set her third state record of the day as the first leg of NSA’s 400-yard freestyle relay team. Bishop’s leadoff leg of 51.64 seconds broke the old record by 0.09 seconds. A relay swimmer can set the state record with an individual time if she’s the leadoff swimmer in the relay.

In the 100 backstroke, Bishop broke a 16-year-old record held by Bess Frank of Norfolk Academy. Bishop beat the record by 0.69 seconds. Bishop’s times in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke are All-American A times.

Bishop reclaimed the 100 freestyle state record as she had it from her 100 free state title as a freshman. Bishop still has the 50 freestyle state record, also from the 2009 VIS Championships.

The Lady Saints finished eighth in the team standings. Andrea Beale, Emily Neuburg and Meredith Davis scored points in their individual events for NSA.
