The Bennetts Creek (BC) 9-10 softball team roared into the league title game with a 10-0, four-inning victory over Olive Branch at John Yeates Middle School on Wednesday. Anna Cain batted in six runs and scored two more in the game.
In the bottom of the first, Tina Parker singled (the first of her three hits), and Holly Bunch reached base as well. Cain, a student at Nansemond Parkway Elementary school, headed to the plate.
&uot;I just wanted to get a base hit,&uot; said the 10-year-old. She did so in a big way; Cain smashed a line drive over the left fielder’s head.
As Parker and Bunch crossed the plate, Cain chugged toward third.
&uot;I looked up, and my coach was waving his arm in a circle. I thought, ‘I must have hit that ball pretty hard.’&uot;
Cain rounded third, and headed for home. But she didn’t need to hurry: the ball was still in left field when she scored. It was the beginning of a 5-0 first-inning jaunt for BC.
While the offense extended the lead to 6-0 in the second, and 8-0 in the third, Mallory Patterson was shutting down Olive Branch from the mound. She struck out eight batter and allowed only one hit.
After Bunch ended Olive Branch’s fourth inning with a play at second base, BC came to bat for the last time. Once again, Cain did her offensive job, scoring the last run to end the game under the slaughter rule.
In the championship on Saturday, Cain will have to show her defensive skills; she’ll be splitting the pitching duties with Stephanie Mahrer. &uot;I’m kind of nervous,&uot; said Cain, who won two games in All-Star competition in 2001 and pitched her Patriots to three victories in the 2002 regular season. &uot;I’m going to try to work the corners, but if I get in trouble, I’m going to through straight strikes!&uot;
