Police pursuit leads to arrest

An 18-year-old Suffolk man is charged with a string of crimes ranging from auto theft to attempting to elude police after he allegedly stole a Honda Accord in Hampton.
Suffolk Police Officer F.M. Cunningham was in pursuit of a 1998 Honda being driven by the suspect, Edwin Michael Goodman, of Woodrow Avenue The chase began at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday
Officer Cunningham observed the suspect as he turned into traffic at the intersection of Route 17 and College Drive in the northern end of the city.
Police Lieutenant T.M. Davenport said the Honda was almost involved in an accident with other vehicles as it sped through the intersection in an attempt to escape.
The driver of the Honda struck a police vehicle during the chase but continued in his attempt to flee the scene.
Lt. Davenport said that after a short pursuit, the suspect then bailed out of the Honda at the intersection of Brookwood Lane and Camellia Drive. The automobile continued down the street.
&uot;After a short foot pursuit, the suspect was apprehended by Officer H.L. Kee,&uot; the lieutenant said. &uot;The Honda continued on, striking a lawn care tractor parked in a yard.&uot;
Lt. Davenport said the suspect is charged with reckless driving, eluding police, hit and run property damage, possession of stolen property, and driving with no operator’s license.
