Mel’s Place wins softball tourney

The Virginia Beach-based team, Mel’s Place, won the championship in the first Women’s Softball Tournament sponsored by the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Nate Goodwin, who has been in charge of the event since it was organized in July, said the tourney is expected to become an annual one.

Coached by Ron Tolles, the women of Mel’s Place played Saturday at Peanut Park in Suffolk.

The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office came in second, Neal Bonneys and Associates took third, and Suffolk Exiles placed fourth.

Mel’s Place from Virginia Beach won the championship in the first Suffolk Sheriff’s Office Women’s Softball Tournament. The all-day event took place Saturday at Peanut Park.

Goodwin said that proceeds from the tournament will go toward a youth football camp sometime next year.

The annual basketball tournament in May will also help in this matter.
