Sorority to fete honorees

The Omega Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority will host its scholarship banquet at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at Temple Beth-El. In conjunction with presenting scholarships, the sorority will give Family Foundation Awards to 10 community members.

According to Janice White, program chairperson, these persons have been instrumental in the development of their families and communities.

&uot;All honorees are applauded for their untiring service to humanity and the community,&uot; said White.

The following people will be recognized:

nCarey Boone and Virginia Boone are the parents of three children. He has retired from the Norfolk Naval Supply Center as a safety director, and she has retired from the Suffolk Public School System as a teacher. They both serve on the Sickle Cell Anemia Board and are life members of

the NAACP.

nGracie Bunch is the mother of four children. She has retired from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital as a licensed practical nurse, and participates in the Willing Workers Club, Prayer Band, Awareness Club and Parish Nurse Ministry.

nBishop Obadiah Colander is the father of 10 children. He is also the pastor of Faith Temple Apostolic Church and is the founder of Colander-Bishop Meadows Apartments and the King’s Kids of America Inc.

nJosephine Felder is the parent of four children. She is a retired captain from the New York City Department for Correction, and is a foster parent for the Department of Social Services. She is also the founder of the Tidewater Section of the National Council of Negro Women.

nFrancis Dowling-Johnson is the parent of three daughters. She is an active member of the Stonebridge Civic League, the NAACP and the International Longshoreman Assoc.

nBarbara Holloman is the parent of two children. She is also a member of Justice, Unity, Generosity and Service Inc. (JUGS), and is an active member of the Usher Board, Food Committee, and Nursery Committee at her church.

nThora Melson is the parent of three children. She is a retired teacher from the Norfolk Public School, and is an active member of the Les Superbes Club and B.T. Washington High School, Norfolk, Reunion Committee.

nMamie Martin-Ross is the parent of one child, and is a retired teacher from the Suffolk Public School System

She is also active in the Gamma Omega Sigma of Gamma Rho Sorority, is a member of the Suffolk Retired Senior Volunteer Program, the Commission Board of the Handicapped, and the Partner in Education Program with Booker T. Washington Elementary School, Suffolk.

nTherbia Parker Sr. is the parent of three children. He is a self-employed general contractor, and is a member of the NAACP, Habitat for Humanity and Holland-Holy Neck Civic League.

nMarlene Simmons is the parent of three children, works as a home health nurse, and is director of

Mary Kay Cosmetics. She is a CPR and nurse’s aide instructor.
