A Portsmouth couple were killed in an accident on U.S. Route 58 in Suffolk over the weekend.
Brian P. Bennington and Mary A. Roan, both of the 300 block of Middle Street, died shortly after the accident that happened around 7 a.m. Sunday near the truck scales on U.S. 58, said Officer Michael E. Simpkins, spokesman for the Suffolk Police Department.
Bennington’s two children, who were in the back seat, suffered minor injuries, Simpkins said. They were airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
The accident happened when Bennington, 31, who was driving a 1992 Isuzu Rodeo east, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to run off the right side of the road, Simpkins said. Bennington then overcorrected, causing the car to cross two lanes, veer off the left side of the road and hit a tree, Simpkins said.
Bennington’s 9-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter were flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by the air ambulance, Nightingale, Simpkins said. Both youngsters were in the back seat and wearing seat belts.
Although Bennington wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, Roan, 31, was, Simpkins said.
Bennington and his family were on their way home from an early Halloween party when the accident happened, Simpkins said.
