Mr. James O. Daughtrey of 2717 East Washington St., Suffolk, died Oct. 20, 2002, in Obici Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time. Crocker Funeral Home is in charge.

Hugh L. Kelley

On Oct. 15, 2002, Hugh L. Kelley of Washington, D.C, a veteran of world War II, passed away in Washington Hospital Center in Washington. Hugh was born July 7, 1924 to the late Oakley S. and Lillian Moore Kelley of Suffolk.

Hugh is survived by two sons, Dmytrick A. and Voncedric and his wife, Evelyn; one daughter, Cynothia McPhail; and his wife Jimmie Tucker Kelley.

Hugh was predeceased by one sister, Evelyn Kelley Chapman and three brothers, Oakley B., Walter Ralph and Pretlow Kelley. His only remaining brother, Robert J, is the proud father of daughter, Jewel.

Hugh is survived by six grandchildren, Lacey, Lynn, Dmytrick II, Christopher, Voncedric II, and Darrell; five great grandchildren, Janvier, Clerra, Latecia, Dalvon, and Tehya.

He also leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews, and friends too numerous to mention.

Hugh was a graduate of Booker T. Washington of Suffolk where he was affectionately known as

Sugar Pie.&uot; He was a graduate of Virginia State University., Petersburg where he received a BS degree in science.

Hugh was employed by the U.S. government as an engineering draftsman for the Bureau of Standards, Washington, D.C. where he worked for many years until his retirement.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 4 p.m. in Oaklawn Cemetery with the Rev. Steven G. Blunt, pastor elect of First Baptist Church, Mahan Street, officiating.

The procession will leave from Crocker Funeral Home at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Edward L. Ricks Sr.

Edward Lee Ricks Sr., 49, of the 2700 block of East Washington Street, Suffolk, died Oct. 18, 2002,in Obici Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Nansemond County and son of the late Willie Ricks Sr.

He was retired from Blair Brothers Construction Co. where he had worked as a heavy equipment foreman.

He is survived by his wife, Hattie Virginia Ricks; his mother, Ethel Mae Artis Ricks; one daughter, Angela Holloway and her husband, Linwood of Suffolk; seven brothers, Willie Ricks Jr. of Sanford, N.C.; Ronald Ricks of Chesapeake; Gregory Ricks of Cragsville; Garland Ricks and Michael Ricks, both of Suffolk; Kenneth Ricks of Burksville, and Leon Ricks of Norfolk; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in Crocker Funeral Home by Bishop Madison Copeland. Interment will be in carver Memorial Cemetery..
