A Suffolk man is being held on charges that he stole an iPhone from a vehicle at Portsmouth City Park on Saturday.

About 1:10 p.m., concerned citizens in the area saw a man walking around pulling on parked vehicle door handles in a parking lot adjacent to the boat ramp and golf course at the park, according to a news release from the city of Portsmouth.

The citizens called dispatchers and relayed their observations while keeping an eye on the suspect, the news release stated.

Police officers responded and detained Albert Leeamzie Riddick, 52. They discovered he allegedly removed an iPhone from one of the vehicles he had tampered with. He had driven to the area in a red Chevrolet Impala, which was parked nearby. It was not registered to him, according to the news release.

He has been charged with one count of grand larceny and one count of vehicle trespass, with additional similar charges pending, according to the news release.

Police also are investigating whether similar crimes in other Portsmouth parking lots are related, according to the release.
