After a big 1-0 win Tuesday over top ranked Hickory, one would think that Kings Fork’s softball team (14-6) would have had their fill of dramatic softball.

That was not quite the case on Friday, though, as the Lady Bulldogs battled with rival Lakeland for a 1-0 win in 11 innings.

Brenna Ginn scored the game-winning run in the top of the 11th inning, after a sacrifice bunt from Ashley Roten and a second consecutive fielding error from Lakeland.

“I know very easily that it could have went the other way,” KF head coach Richard Froemel said after the game. “When you go eleven innings, everything is a little more at stake each inning.

“Unfortunately, defensively is where your mistakes are going to happen, and we were just fortunate to hang in there.”

In a game where each scoreless inning made each defensive play more valuable, the two errors by the Lady Cavaliers were the only errors by either team all game.

Both teams struggled at the plate, which had a lot to do with the freshman pitchers on the mound for both squads.

Sydney Wash came up big again for the Lady Bulldogs. She pitched all 11 innings, striking out 13 batters, while walking one and giving up eight hits.

Brooke Mizelle did her best to match her freshman counterpart. She fanned 12 batters, giving up five hits and no walks.

Lakeland had more than enough opportunities to win the game, notably the bottom of the tenth inning when they left runners on second and third base.

The Lady Cavaliers were zero for five with runners in scoring position.

With the win KF completed a season sweep of Lakeland, but with seeding still undecided for the Southeastern District Tournament, there is a possibility of the two teams meeting again.

The SED Tournament begins next Friday.
