Use of convict labor on roads opposed

RICHMOND (AP) – For the fourth time, the Virginia Highway Commission has recommended that the use of convict labor on the state’s road system be discontinued. The recommendation was included in the report for the fiscal year ended June 30, now before Gov. Perry for his consideration.

Morris to know fate in few days

Jerry M. Morris, convicted slayer of Patrolman Joseph B. Pratt, will be given a new trial or sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison in accordance with a jury verdict when he appears before Judge James M. McLemore two weeks from today to hear argument of motions offered by defense counsel. When the plea of guilt of first degree murder and recommendation for life imprisonment came down at the conclusion of the trial last week, James G. Martin, of defense counsel, moved the court to set aside the verdict and grant a new trial based on errors committed in the trial.

Monday night to see gathering of business men

Suffolk’s largest gathering of business men this year will be held at the Elliott Hotel Monday night when the Lions and Rotary clubs join with the Chamber of Commerce in the annual banquet and membership meeting of the commercial organization. The meeting climaxes the work of the chamber for the past year and begins a new year of activity for the 1935 directorate. The personnel on the board to direct activities in 1936 will also be announced.

Boy Scout 1936 drive next week

J. Melvin Lovelace today was named general chairman of the 1936 budget drive for the Boy Scouts of the Old Dominion area.

The appointment of Lovelace to head the fund-raising drive was announced by Charles B. Pond, president of the area council, who also stated plans for the organization to raise enough money to continue boy scouting in Suffolk and surrounding counties during the coming year.
