A week full of blowouts in the NFL

2-14. No, that’s not the Redskins’ record (not this year, at least). It was mine for last week’s Picks. Shows what a week full of great games can do to a sportswriter, doesn’t it? With many of today’s games looking lopsided on paper, just maybe I’ll do better!
Miami 35, Buffalo 7. Barring a nuclear war or Armageddon, the Dolphins have a safe spot in the playoffs. But this game is for pride – the Bills embarrassed Miami 23-10 earlier this season. The Dolphins are on a roll after demolishing San Diego last week, while Buffalo has lost three straight. Ricky Williams should carry for at least 200 yards today.
Baltimore 42, Cincinnati 13. The Bengals have proven to be a welcome addition to any schedule for years, and the Ravens, who will jump back to .500 with a win today, are trying to salvage a respectable season. Baltimore may not have Ray Lewis, but Cincinnati doesn’t have an offense. Jamal Lewis and Jeff Blake, who combined for 311 yards in a 38-27 win over &uot;Sin&uot;cinnati earlier this season, will take another home today.
Chicago 13, Green Bay 6. The Upset Pick of the week. The Packers haven’t lost three straight since December 1999, but they don’t deserve this one. Brett Favre has stumbled the past two weeks, including four interceptions in last week’s loss to Tampa Bay, which delayed the Packers’ clinching of the NFC North. Jim Miller threw for 250 yards in the Bears’ win over Detroit last week, so he has nothing to lose.
Pittsburgh 27, Jacksonville 24. Two weeks after suffering a concussion and spinal cord injuries, Tommy Maddox has vowed to return today. He should probably stay out and come back with guns blazing against Houston and Carolina over the next two weeks. Kordell Stewart’s gusto switch was in the &uot;ON&uot; position last week in his team’s win over Cincinnati, so if he can keep up that intensity, the Steelers should come out on top.
Kansas City 40, Arizona 28. Does anyone else wonder why fans in Kansas City don’t do the Tomahawk Chop? How about Christian Okoye disappearing from the sports pages as quickly as a man named Bo Jackson? Oh, you mean there’s a game I’m supposed to be Picking? Oh well, Priest Holmes will rip an Arizona that’s ranked 30th in the league and smile about it.
Atlanta 41, Minnesota 3. Let me see if I can write this without using the term &uot;Michael Vick.&uot; Oh, who am I kidding? That’s like trying to write about home runs without mentioning Barry Bonds. Anyway, Hampton Roads’ finest contribution to the NFL will lead his team to another victory today, and Minnesota will still be looking for answers next season.
Tennessee 21, New York Giants 20. This one should be good. Both teams are coming off disappointing losses, and need wins today to stay in the playoff picture. But Tennessee has just a BIT more incentive; next weekend, they battle the first place Colts. When Donovan Mc-Nabb’s ankle gave out two weeks ago, the Giants got overconfident, which cost them dearly in a loss to Houston. If that happens today, the Titans will burn them as well.
Cleveland 30, Carolina 5. Last season, Cleveland saw its playoff hopes collapse, losing five of its last six. This time around, they’ve won four of their last five and now take on a team that’s lost eight straight. The Browns came through in last week’s upset of New Orleans, while the Panthers were destroyed 41-0 by Atlanta.
Indianapolis 30, Houston 19. This game is a break for the Colts, who have beaten Denver and Philadelphia in the past three weeks (they also beat Dallas, but who have the Cowboys beaten recently? Oh wait, there was that game last Thursday…). The Texans are coming off a big win over the Giants, so the Colts know that they can’t be underestimated. Marvin Harrison needs 24 catches to break Herman Moore’s single-season record of 123, so he and Peyton Manning should put on a show today.
Denver 13, San Diego 11. The Chargers don’t want another last-season collapse like last year, when they went from 5-3 to 5-11. Denver dominated them in a 26-9 victory on Oct. 6, so expect no mercy from either side. Brian Griese, who went 26 of 35 for 316 yards in the first game, is questionable today with leg injuries, but the Bronco defense, ranked first in the league against the run, should be able to get things done.
Philadelphia 24, St. Louis 16. Koy Detmer found what a cruel mistress Fate can be last week, having the game of his short career in a 38-17 whomping of San Francisco before suffering a dislocated elbow. Now the Eagles turn to A.J. Feeley (sounds like the name of a &uot;Simpsons&uot; character, doesn’t it?), who has thrown 14 passes in his career. But the Rams might also be without several offensive weapons, as Marshall Faulk is questionable with an ankle injury. A Feeley win today will be a Disney film in the making.
San Francisco 42, Seattle 30. Like the Giants, the 49ers lost to overconfidence last week, getting burned by Koy Detmer in the Philly loss. They’re anxious to atone for that, but a Seattle offense that put on one of the most impressive outings in recent memory last week – amassing 534 yards against the Chiefs – won’t make it easy. But San Francisco has the defense that Kansas City doesn’t, so they should win today.
Tampa Bay 21, New Orleans 7. With the Saints reeling, Tampa Bay should have an easy time of it. Their defense is first in the league, allowing 11.5 points and 253.5 yards per game. But New Orleans has been one of the few teams to crack it this year, churning up 368 yards and 21 first downs on Opening Day. The Bucs will take their fifth in a row, and the Saints will be left to regroup once again.
Oakland 17, New York Jets 14. Badda-boom! The Jets have come out of nowhere to take four in a row, while Oakland has rediscovered its magic by taking three straight to leap back into first place in the AFC West. The Raiders have the top-ranked offense in the NFL, but Chad Pennington and Curtis Martin have breathed some fresh life into the Jet engines. Oakland gets the Pick, but a Jet victory won’t be a stunner.
