Corderial Carson scored 13 points and Charlie Holloman added nine as David Rawls Electrical (DRE) came from behind to defeat George’s Steakhouse in the quarterfinals of the YMCA ages 13-15 basketball league tournament Saturday at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. Defense won the game for DRE, as they kept George’s from scoring more than three consecutive points until late in the fourth quarter, when DRE already held a comfortable lead.

DeWayne King and Pierre Watkins swished two free throws for George’s to open the game, but Carson tied it with a jumper and Jesse Cox sank a three-pointer to give DRE a 5-2 lead. King then soared through the DRE defense for a pair of layups, and Kris Brown and Watkins broke away for a 10-5 lead.

Watkins and King scored six quick points to extend their team’s lead to 16-6 in the first two minutes of the second quarter, and each team scored four points. With 2:36 left, Holloman hit a jumper from the top of the key, and Carson charged through for two layups to get to 20-16.

Victor Taglis hit a free throw for George’s, but Carson hit a layup to end the first half and another to open the second. King banked home a jumper, but Holloman and Andrew Case dropped in three points to tie the score.

King scored three points of his own, but DRE took over in the last two minutes. Holloman opened things with a jumper, and Aaron Smith swished a pair of free throws. Josh Korahoes hit a layup, and Carson rattled in three points to close the quarter ahead 31-26.

Korahoes and King traded baskets in the first 1:15 of the fourth quarter, and Holloman and Carson combined for six consecutive points for a 39-29 lead. George’s outscored DRE 10-4 in the remainder, but time ran out, and the Electrical team had zapped its way to the semifinals, which were played Saturday evening.

The championship games in the boys and girls leagues will be held today at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, beginning at 1 p.m.
