In posting the low score at the Roanoke College Invitational over the weekend, Suffolk native Ben Hunter became both the tournament medalist and the new owner of the Apprentice School record for lowest scoring average in a season.

Hunter, a Lakeland High School alumnus and a sophomore at the Apprentice School, finished the season with an average of 75.04 over 22 rounds, beating the former record of 75.9, which was held by assistant coach B.J. Maben.

Hunter ended the tournament and the season in exciting fashion, closing out regular tournament play at the Roanoke Country Club with a three-over-par 145, which tied him with Randolph-Macon’s Hunter Weaver. The pair went into a sudden-death playoff, which Suffolk’s Hunter won on the first hole with a 30-foot birdie, earning him medalist honors for the tournament.

The Apprentice School team shot a 317 on the day, with a two-day total of 630, which tied them for fourth place with Washington & Lee University. Bluefield State (607) won the event, followed by Stevenson (628) and Randolph-Macon (629). Two Roanoke College teams and a team from UVA Wise rounded out the participants.

While the Builders’ score was not enough to put them on top for the tournament, it did contribute to another record set on Sunday: The team broke the single-season lowest-scoring-average record with a 319.95 score over 22 rounds. The former record was held by the 2006-07 team, which averaged 320.05 over 20 rounds.
