Alice B. Brown

Alice Beatrice Brown, daughter of the late Bishop Eddie and Mobie Sykes Evans, was born on Sept. 19, 1922, in Suffolk. She was the 11th of 12 children. Alice was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She left to mourn, 37 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild when she passed away silently at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in Obici Hospital.
She is also survived by her husband, James S. Brown, and their nine children: Consteller B. Ledbetter, and her husband, Linwood, Linda B. Mercer, and her husband, Jordan, Lessie B. Lewter, and husband, Clyde, and Willis W. Brown, all of Suffolk; Mobie B. Hurt of San Diego, Calif.; James E. Brown of the Bronx, N.Y.; Anita B. Mitchell of Virginia Beach; Eddie L. Brown and Dwight B. Brown, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Alice was employed as a professional cook for more than 30 years.
Many knew her for her fine culinary skill while employed at the Horse Shoe Restaurant and the &uot;Lagoon Motel.&uot;
She was employed as cook for Nansemond County and Suffolk public school cafeterias, Girl Scout Council, Maryview Hospital, and other places.
She was a volunteer cook at DAV for several years, and she had a home cooking ministry whereby she cooked and fed those who were in need of food and clothing.
Alice was given the unofficial titles of lawyer and social worker because she was always able to help those in need.
She always knew which direction to send them for help. When they left her, they had what they needed or they knew where to turn to get help. She gave them hope when they had none.
The celebration of her life will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 28 in St. John Pentecostal Holiness Church on North Division Street.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 31 in St. Timothy Baptist Church, 1613 E. Washington St., by the Rev. Thomas Harden.
Interment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
