?Suffolk Public Schools will be closed for Spring Break – Monday, April 14 through Friday, April 18.

Students and staff report back to their regular schedule on Monday, April 21.

?The city’s two year-round schools – Booker T. Washington Elementary School and Northern Shores Elementary School – will have their last intersession for the school year during the week following Spring Break.

From Monday, April 21 through Friday, April 25, students participating in the intersession of remedial and enrichment classes will be in school from 9 a.m. to1 p.m.

Both schools will return to the traditional calendar schedule for the 2003-04 school year.

?Tune in to WSPS-Channel 6, the school division’s education access channel on Charter Communications, for the following programs now through Sunday, April 20.

At 8 a.m.,

noon and 7 p.m., the rebroadcast of the Suffolk School Board’s meeting from Thursday, April 3 will be aired, followed by the latest edition of &uot;Starlight Journal,&uot; featuring Oakland Elementary School, Nansemond Parkway Elementary School, and King’s Fork Middle School.

?Tutoring offered at Lakeland High School includes two options for students in need of extra assistance.

SOL remedial tutoring is currently available through Thursday, May from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

A snack and transportation home are provided.

Tutoring in English 11 is offered Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Monday’s sessions also focus on science (earth science, biology and chemistry).

Tuesday’s sessions also focus on mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II).

Thursday’s sessions also focus on history (World History to 1500 AD, World History 1500 to Present, and U.S. History).

The second option for tutoring is after-school tutoring for all subjects provided by individual classroom teachers.

Parents should contact their child’s teachers for days and times.

?Parents of Early Start are encouraged to attend an April workshop.

This month’s free session – which are open to all parents – focuses on developing reading skills.

Parents learn basic teaching techniques to use at home, helping their child develop good beginning reading skills.

The program is being presented by Reading Recovery teachers form Suffolk Public Schools.

Sessions will be continue this month at 7 p.m.

Thursday, April 10 at Booker T. Washington Elementary School; and again on Thursday, April 24 at Mount Zion Elementary School.

?Robertson Elementary School will host an Accelerated Reader party on Thursday, April 10, complete with a visit of the A.R. fairy.

Students will be making their own books – blank journals in which they can write poems or original stories.

Like a publishing company, they will be binding a cover and gluing pages.

Students in kindergarten through second grade will create their books at 9:30 a.m.

Third- through fifth-graders will work on their journals at 1:30 p.m.

?Fifth-graders at Oakland Elementary School will participate in Civil War Days from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, April 11 at the school.

Hands-on activities will help students understand what life was like for people during this time in history.

The event will include costumes, artifacts and activities.

?Early Start classes from Booker T. Washington Elementary School will travel to Whidbee Farms on Longstreet Lane in Holland to participate in a hayride and Easter egg hunt on Friday, April 11.

They will have a visit with the Easter bunny, and see a spring garden and baby animals.
