Isle of Wight Academy’s JV boys basketball team finished this season with an 18-2 overall record and as the regular season champions of the Metro Conference with a 13-1 conference mark.
In the conference tournament final, the Chargers defeated Atlantic Shores for the second time this year, 65-56 in overtime.
The Chargers used a stingy man-to-man defense and full-court pressure to overcome a 9-point deficit in the fourth quarter. IWA held the Seahawks scoreless in the last two minutes of regulation and outscored them 15-6 in overtime. Tenacious defense and hot shooting down the stretch proved to be the difference for the first-time Metro champions.
The Chargers relied on their defense all season, playing textbook man-to-man defense to limit their opponents to an average of 38 points per game.
The season was a total team effort for the Chargers. They rarely were led in scoring by the same player. When teams keyed on one player the Chargers worked their passing-game offense to perfection and hit the open man for a layup.
It was just five short years ago that the Chargers were 0-14 in the conference. Each year the teams have worked hard and put in countless hours of practice to get the program back to its once proud tradition of winning championships.
