Being the top St. Patrick’s Day runner in Hampton Roads just isn’t good enough for William Chorey Jr.

The local real estate agent, Suffolk native and hobbyist runner finished in 10th place out of more than 3,300 participants in the 40th annual Yuengling Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach on Sunday. It was the top finish by any Hampton Roads runner and the top in his age and gender category.

Although he said he was happy with the place, he was disappointed with the time.

“I was trying to go a little bit faster, but it is what it is,” he said. “Everybody had to deal with the same conditions.”

Chorey said the unseasonable warmth and the characteristic windiness of the oceanfront area slowed down all of the participants.

He ran the race in 2 hours, 45 minutes, 53 seconds. He shaved more than three minutes off his time from the ING New York City Marathon in November.

“My goal is to end up in the 2:30s,” Chorey said. “I think that’s the best that I can probably get.”

Chorey said there were plenty of crazy, green costumes at the event, which was run the day after St. Patrick’s Day. He wasn’t wearing one, but he did wear green.

“If you’re not (wearing green), then you’re in trouble,” Chorey said. “I cannot imagine running that far wearing all that stuff.”

Chorey was one of 30 Suffolk residents who ran the marathon. About 139 from Suffolk participated in the half-marathon and 161 from Suffolk ran the 8K.
