Horse looks for stable home

Suffolk Animal Control usually deals with dogs and cats, but they have a different kind of mammal available for adoption lately.

A chestnut mare named Penny is available for adoption from Suffolk Animal Control. She has a disease, but it can be managed with medication.

Penny, an 18- to 20-year-old chestnut mare, was seized for Animal Control officers last fall because she was severely underweight. She has been diagnosed with heaves, a breathing condition that causes a horse to breathe heavier and faster, which causes them to burn more calories. It is manageable with medication as needed, but Penny does not currently need medication for it.

Penny now is at a healthy weight and is described as “usually sweet but needs a little direction in the manners category.”
