Alice Christine Nelms, 89, of 1040 Carolina Road, Suffolk, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, in her residence.

A native of Suffolk, she was the widow of P.C. Nelms, and the daughter of the late Lloyd Oscar Holland and Mittie Annie Byrd Holland. She was also predeceased by her brothers Oscar A. Holland and William E. Holland.

She was a homemaker.

A member of Southside Baptist Church, she taught junior and beginner classes in Sunday School for 33 years, served as the financial secretary for 28 years and was former president of the WMU chairman of Social Community.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie Anne and Jimmy Beasley of Mars hill, N.C.; a son, Elliott C. Nelms of Satellite Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Darrell Keith Beasley, Cynthia Jo Hobbs, Scott E. and Lisa Nelms, Ramona Lynne Hyatt, and Clark C. Nelms; great-grandchildren, Heather and Matthew Beasley, Melissa and William Hyatt, Dakota Ray Hobbs, and Tara Nichole Nelms.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of the Harrell and Hill Funeral Home, with the Rev. R. Stewart McCarter officiating. Interment will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may join family from 3-4 p.m. Sunday in the Harrell and Hill Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
