The folks who frequently stay at Davis Lakes Campground are a big family, and they’re proving it this weekend.
The entire community has come together to help raise money for Gary Baines, a frequent guest there who has cancer. The fundraiser was organized by his son, Tim Baines.
Baines was diagnosed in January with esophageal cancer and is being treated with chemotherapy and radiation. He and his wife, Lisa, have no medical insurance, and the bills are piling up. They anticipate at least another six months of recovery that will include surgery.
“He’s going to bounce back from this,” Lisa Baines said.
But in the meantime, the couple could use some encouragement. That’s why Tim Baines decided to hold a fundraiser, and many guests at Davis Lakes are pitching in.
“All these family and friends are getting together and trying to do something to help us out with our medical bills,” she said. “It’s overwhelming.”
On Saturday, a yard sale will begin at 7 a.m. at Davis Lakes. Barbecue will be sold by the pound from noon to 4 p.m., and barbecue plates also will be sold. Cost is $7 a pound, and preorders are required by calling 615-6246.
An auction also will begin at 4 p.m., and there will be raffles, food and drinks throughout the day.
Baines, a lifelong resident of Suffolk, has owned the band 32 South for years and is its drummer and lead singer. He has also played for numerous other bands throughout Suffolk.
“That’s one thing that he’s looking forward to is getting back to that,” his wife said. “That’s really pushing him to get well.”
Lisa Baines said she and her husband are grateful for the support of their family and friends.
“It’s like everybody comes together at his time of need,” she said. “They’ve all just pitched in.”
To reach the campground, take Horton Drive off Carolina Road just south of the Southwest Bypass. For more information, call 539-1191.
