Obici Health System plans evening of health information for men

From &uot;Home Improvement&uot; to &uot;Monster House&uot; and &uot;Monster Garage,&uot; men and a do-it-yourself mentality are a familiar combination.

Obici Hospital is urging men to apply the same zeal to their health as they apply to their homes and vehicles. The hospital, 2800 Godwin Blvd., will sponsor &uot;Men’s Night Out: Tools for Good Health&uot; on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on the Garden Level. The event is free and refreshments will be served. To register, call 934-4981. Sons, buddies or spouses are welcome.

Men’s Night Out will feature speakers on prostate cancer, high blood pressure and back pain. There will be exhibits on sleep disorders, heartburn, colon cancer, heart health, pain management and more. Obici Chef Greg Retz will conduct an outdoor cooking demonstration and offer tips on buying and using a grill. A tool and hardware expert from Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse will demonstrate home repair products and share safety advice.

Dr. Miley Walker, a urologist on the medical staff of Obici Hospital and Lakeview Medical Center, will give the presentation on the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. He will also discuss the medications available to help patients who experience sexual dysfunction as a side effect of their treatment.

In addition, the facilitator and members of the Man to Man Support Group will be available to talk. Obici and the American Cancer Society sponsor the group for prostate cancer patients, survivors and their spouses.

Dr. James Waddy will cover the prevention and management of hypertension, or high blood pressure, a leading cause of heart attacks and strokes and a serious complication of

diabetes. Dr. Waddy is a family practice specialist with North Suffolk Family Medicine and a member of Obici’s Medical Staff.

Alan Wilson, director of Rehabilitative Services for Obici Health System, will discuss how to prevent back injuries and what therapies are available for people who suffer from back pain.

This is Obici’s first Men’s Night Out. Men may bring a female guest, such as their spouse or a caregiver, if they wish. Please provide both names when calling to register.
