Baylor ended Georgetown’s women’s basketball season Monday night with a 49-33 win in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Berkeley, Ca.

No. 4-seed Baylor held the No. 5 Lady Hoyas to 17.1 percent field goal shooting. Six-foot-8 freshman Brittany Griner blocked 14 shots for Baylor.

Freshman TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork) led Georgetown with nine points.

Georgetown’s 26-7 record is the best in program history.

Rodgers was the Big East Rookie of the Year and named first-team all-conference, making her the first Lady Hoya freshman to earn the honor. Rodgers set a school record with 83 three-pointers made in a season. Rodgers averaged 17.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game for the season.

Hampton’s softball team won a pair of games against Bowie St. and one game versus Lincoln this past weekend in Bowie, Md.

Sophomore infielder Kelsei Saunders (Nansemond River) went 3-for-4 and hit her seventh home run of the season in one of the Bowie St. games. For the season, Saunders is hitting .361 with 25 RBI. Hampton is 11-19 overall.

Fayetteville State’s softball squad swept CIAA rival St. Augustine’s 17-3 and 11-1 Thursday in Raleigh.

Sophomore rightfielder LaTonia Gatling (King’s Fork), in the leadoff spot for FSU (11-15, 4-3), scored four runs in the 17-3 game and went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run in the 11-1 win.

For the season, Gatling’s hitting .269 with a .417 on-base percentage and is 12-for-14 on stolen bases.

Chowan (16-17, 10-0) is still undefeated in the CIAA softball season. The Lady Hawks won 22-0 and 37-2 against St. Augustine’s on Saturday.

Junior outfielder Mindy Byrd (King’s Fork) is hitting .394 with two homers and 22 RBI for Chowan. Freshman outfielder Shelby Pendleton (Lakeland) has five hits and eight runs in 12 at-bats.
