Police have charged the driver in Sunday morning’s fatal vehicle accident with driving under the influence of alcohol and other offenses.
Freddie Anderson Davis, 64, of the 1600 block of Nansemond Parkway, is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and his third offense of driving on a suspended operator’s license, according to city spokeswoman Debbie George.
The wreck occurred about 5:30 a.m. Sunday on East Washington Street. Preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle occupied by four people was traveling eastbound in the 2600 block of East Washington Street when it ran off the road to the left. The vehicle struck a ditch and rolled several times, ejecting one of the passengers before striking a house.
The ejected passenger, 56-year-old Alvin Austin, died at the scene. The driver and two other passengers were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment.
The road was closed for several hours Sunday morning while police investigated. It reopened just before 11 a.m.
