Ducks fly past Cavaliers in Tip-Off Classic

Lakeland’s Eric Ruffin (foreground) and Kenny Reid (background) find themselves in a tough but familiar position Saturday afternoon, as Lakeland was unable to mount a real offensive attack against a smothering Frederick Douglass defense in a 76-55 loss in the opening round of the Tip-Off Classic at Nansemond River. Reid and Mike Camp led Lakeland with 13 points each, and Ruffin scored 12. Darold Lewis (right) scored four points for the Cavaliers, who will take on Great Bridge at home Tuesday. Nansemond River’s game against Woodbridge in the tournament’s final contest was not completed at press time (the News-Herald erroneously reported that the Warriors defeated Oscar Smith on Friday night, a game they actually lost). NRHS will visit Indian River on Tuesday.
