It took a quarter for Lakeland to get rolling on Tuesday night, but once the Cavaliers got their acts in gear, Great Bridge didn’t have a jump shot. After finishing the first period behind 12-11, Lakeland started a roll that didn’t end until they had their first Southeastern District victory of the season, a 59-43 win over the visiting Wildcats. The win helped Lakeland recover from a resounding loss to Frederick Douglass in last week’s Tip-Off Classic, and gave them some momentum heading into Thursday, when they host Virginia Beach’s Kempsville.

Eric Ruffin, held scoreless in the first period, dropped in three quick layups, and Josh Russell notched his second and third three-point attempts of the night as the Cavaliers outscored their opponents 18-8. Ruffin absolutely cut loose on Great Bridge in the second half, repeatedly burning through the Wildcat defense for layups or dishing off to Mike Camp or Mark Plenty, who ended the night with eight and four points, respectively.

The score from the Nansemond River-Indian River game on Tuesday was not reported.
